Volunteer Highlight: Dallas Wilkes

Posted by Guest Blogger: Barbara

Dallas Wilkes has been attending Summit Church since November 2009 and is one of the volunteers for Base Camp Live! (BCL), Summit’s family production, at the Herndon campus. One Sunday morning, Summit greeters were passing out flyers about BCL. The flyer encouraged anyone to check out the show if they were interested in volunteering.

Dallas felt in his heart that he wanted to start serving at Summit in some capacity. This led him to audition for BCL, even though he thought it sounded like too much fun to be considered service. With the little bit of acting experience that Dallas had, he really felt confident that he stole the show. When Darling, the BCL Coordinator, told him “We’ll let you know,” Dallas thought that meant he did not get the part and that she was just being nice. A few days later Darling invited him to go and see BCL, but then she invited him to be in the show instead of just watching it! One of the actors had just moved away, and a role needed to be filled quickly. Dallas was the perfect person to fill that role.

I asked Dallas if there was any particular factor that drew him to work with BCL. He said that he likes to be creative because he does not get to do it very often at work. Being involved with BCL seemed like a great opportunity to serve and be creative at the same time. The concept of BCL interested him because he has a heart for families. “A lot of times you can touch the heart of families by going through the kids,” he says. BCL serves as a catalyst to help families start conversations that they might not normally have.

Dallas says there are some really talented people who work with BCL. He feels like God uses him, even though he does not have a background in acting. Dallas wants the kids to know and understand that anyone can serve God. Even though he really did not grow up acting, Dallas had some experience with smaller theater productions as a kid. He finds a lot of joy in creating things. He loves to write and take photos as well.

At BCL, Dallas plays the character Jeremy. Jeremy is the sports-minded guy of the group. If you have never checked out BCL, go check it out. It is a great place for families to grow together!
