Virtue & Vanity

18

The closer we get to holiness, the more painfully aware we become of how unholy most of our thoughts and urges can really be.

Our flesh desires to maintain our reputation, even if it costs us our honesty.

Our flesh desires to hang onto our anger, even if it costs us our peace.

Our flesh desires to broadcast any good we actually manage to do, even if it costs us any chance we have to cultivate a heart of true virtue—a real desire to do the things for which we only now seek to credit.

But what if there’s a joy that’s greater than the feeling of being right? What if there’s an affirmation greater than the feeling of status? What if there’s a point when doing good feels more natural than sin?

Will we ever want to be good, for goodness’ sake?
