One Church: Multiple Locations // A Big Sunday for Summit
This past Sunday was a very big day in the life of Summit, coming just before we finish up an exciting summer! Students have served at Surge in the City and EdgeSERVES, the Lake Mary campus launched, the great #summitselfieschtick occurred, Team Summer rocked it in Base Camp, and all the while we’ve been Roamin’ through Romans together as a church. With Vision Sunday on the horizon, students going back to school this week and next, and all of the other incredible fall events we have in store, we wanted to take a minute to celebrate all of the big things God did in and through Summit this Sunday! A new chapter in Lake Mary’s history has begun!
This Sunday, we officially opened the doors to our permanent home in the Lake Mary area! We saw neighbors and co-workers—invited by our Lake Mary congregants—walk through the lobby doors excited to be a part of this community that their friends have been talking about for the last three years! Our Base Camp rooms were overflowing with kids hearing (some for the first time) how God made them, God loves them, and Jesus wants to be their friend forever. New attendees and Lake Mary alumni got a chance to connect after service over coffee and desserts and celebrate the end of a season inside the Lake Mary High School and look forward together to this new season of ministry and all of its possibilities.
- We saw over 100 new attendees this weekend!
- 10 new families checked in to Base Camp and 25 newcomers stopped by the Information Booth to say “hi!” and learn more about the Lake Mary campus!
Herndon joined in on the fun!
Teaching Minister Zach Van Dyke took his sermon on the road and headed to Lake Mary. The Herndon campus got a chance to feel what it is like to be at one of our video venue campuses by watching Zach on the screens for the morning services. And it was quite a success! Many of you even came up to us to discuss multi-site venues now that you’d gotten a closer look!
- 50 First Impressions volunteers greeted guests, brewed coffee, sold books, and served faithfully!
- The 11 a.m. service was at capacity—that is 700 people in one room worshiping together!
- In Base Camp, 374 kids had the opportunity to learn about Jesus and how much he loves them!
The Waterford Potluck successfully proved that everybody loves fried chicken!
Our Waterford Connect group leaders came together with our Waterford staff to host the first Waterford potluck. The main courses—fried chicken, hot dogs, fried chicken, veggie burgers, and did we mention fried chicken?—were provided by Summit and all of the side items and desserts were brought by Connect group leaders. Everyone at Waterford was invited to pull up a seat and join in as we ate together, made new connections, and built on existing relationships.
The response to this event was overwhelming! Every nook and cranny of the campus was filled with people eating, laughing, and sharing stories. And how about that quick response when the inevitable afternoon Florida rain came? What a great example of everyone coming together!
- There were 350 people in attendance at the potluck!
- 20 Connect groups were represented!
- There were approximately 252 pieces of fried chicken consumed!
We are almost there!
This Sunday was a great day for the Backpack Drive across all Summit campuses! Images of Jedi Knights, Olaf, colorful monsters, and adorable kittens poked out from the mountain of backpacks that grew larger and larger throughout the day.
- Just on Sunday alone, we collected 300 backpacks, getting us just 100 backpacks shy of our 600 goal!
This has been the largest Backpack Drive we have ever been a part of and we have had the largest response to it. Thank you to the many who have engaged in the Backpack Drive and helped to provide hundreds of children in the Orlando area the supplies they need for this school year!
There is still time if you would like to participate! Drop off a Backpack this week. Grab the school supply list here and find out more details!
These stories are great examples of what is ahead for our Summit congregation. There will be so many more opportunities this fall to connect with others and to reach friends and family who are far from God. We're so grateful we get to go to church with you here at Summit, and we can't wait to see what God has for us all next!
